Sociology is the scientific study of the development, structure, and function of human society. Sociologists examine the ways in which social structures and institutions, such as class, family, community, knowledge and power influence society.

In 2004 Degree College Kulgam Started academic activities and Sociology was introduced as one of the major courses to be taught at undergraduate level.

The department is offering various courses to undergraduate students. The existing strength of students in the department is 2200 pursuing B.A through semester system and CBCS.

The department offers academic courses like Introduction to Sociology, Indian Society: Structure and Change, Sociological thought and theory, Social Institutions, Methodology of Social Research as well as Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) viz. Techniques of Social Research, Gender Sensitization, Sociology of Development, Sociology of Crime, Population Studies and Rural Development in India for overall development of student fraternity. 


ASIFA MUNJKHAL, Senior Assistant Professor (HoD) 

After completing her M.A, M.Phil in Sociology from University of Kashmir in 2006 she has joined the Higher Education Department Government of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009.

From last 8 years she is actively involved in teaching sociology to undergraduate students. Besides teaching sociology she is vigorously involved in health care services provided to college students and also organizes various activities related to NSS from time to time.

She has completed two projects 1. Parental attitude towards girl child in district Anantnag and 2. Disappeared persons in Srinagar city during her studentship besides she has a published book. Her area of special interest in the field of sociology is rural sociology.

Dr. A
arif Malik, Assistant Professor

Has completed M.A, M.Phil, Ph.d in Sociology. He has started his teaching career in sociology as Lecturer on Academic Arrangement Since 2012 and has taught sociology at under graduate level in different colleges of south Kashmir.

In June 2017 he has been appointed as Assistant professor in Sociology.

Dr. Aarif has published various research papers in reputed journals in the field of rural sociology and has presented 04 papers at national and state level seminars.

His areas of special concern in the field of sociology are Sociological theories, Rural Sociology, Agrarian Studies and Food Security.

SHABEER  AHMAD BHAT, Assistant Professor

M.A, M.PHIL, NET, JRF, SET Sociology

Has started his teaching career at undergraduate level as Assistant Professor in Sociology from Govt. Degree College Kulgam in 2017.

Mr. Shabeer has 14 research papers published in reputed national and international journals besides he has presented 04 papers in international conferences in the domain of sociology.

His area of special interest is Sociology of Religion.
